Santa Barbara County, CA – Wastewater Lift Station Retrofit

Project Assets

Project Description

Santa Barbara County needed to retrofit an existing lift station site to effectively replace a failing system. The lift station retrofit needed to handle medium flows of municipal sewer from two inlet lines and make use of limited site space. The low head conditions were met with 2 hp BJM submersible shredder pumps in a duplex configuration. These pumps were needed to handle difficult water conditions from a nearby restaurant. Pump maintenance was improved through the addition of a Thern Commander 1000 crane to lift the 150 lb. pumps from the well. The retrofit used a fiberglass insert to install directly into the existing well. This prevented site excavation where there was limited space and difficult dewatering requirements. A separate valve vault comprises check valves, shut-off valves, and an accessible pumping port for emergency bypass pumping. Romtec Utilities also provided the retrofit control panel for this system with a tie-in for a mobile generator that was supplied by Santa Barbara County.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities

Romtec Utilities was first contacted by Flowers & Associates, the site civil engineer, to help with the design of this lift station retrofit project. The project included several difficult requirements that needed to be included in the retrofit plan. First, a nearby restaurant sewer flowed into this station, creating difficult water with the potential for grease and other suspended solids. Next, the site was small and could not be excavated on without becoming prohibitively expensive. Romtec Utilities was able to meet these requirements and develop a specification for the retrofit. Ultimately, Hanley Engineering won the project for the installation as well as other types of work related to the expanded retrofit project. Romtec Utilities was able to keep this project on budget while meeting several challenging criteria for the design.
