Praxair Hydrogen Refinery – Self-Priming Pumping Skid
Project Description
This packaged pump station was the second of two pump stations supplied for industrial process water and stormwater at two Valero oil refineries. The design criteria specified varying flows which required a duplex pump configuration with an included “jockey” pump to handle the smaller flows. For this system, skid-mounted self-priming pumps were used because there was very high pressure in the force main, limiting the availability of cost effective submersibles that could handle the pressure. The skid-mounted pumps were designed to bolt directly to the top slab of the wet well for simple installation.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Praxair, Inc. and S & B Engineers and Constructors contacted Romtec Utilities to design and supply two identical pump stations for hydrogen refineries to be installed at two Valero oil refineries. The first pump station was designed per the specification, but this pump station needed to pump against nearly 100 psi in the force main. Romtec Utilities recommended using skid-mounted self-priming pumps to essentially “retrofit” the design of the first pump station. Praxair and S & B were satisfied as this solution met their design criteria and saved them time and money over a complete redesign of the system. Romtec Utilities provided complete construction documents to show how to mount the skid and performed start-up services after installation was complete.
