Wastewater Lift Station Project Description

In Ontario, California, the Ontario Christian High School was undergoing renovations. The General Contractor (GC) CCI was building a new, state of the art building that would be a dual student center and athletic facility. This new addition to the high school would provide a new gymnasium, weight and training rooms, softball fields, and new parking lots with bus loading areas and plentiful parking.

As the project was progressing, and partway through construction, they realized that they needed a wastewater lift station and in a quick time-frame. The Site Engineer, TKE Engineering, who is familiar with Romtec Utilities pre-cast designs and quick turnarounds, then brought the project to Romtec Utilities.

The wet well in the Romtec Utilities supplied lift station has a 6’ inner diameter (ID) and a 30.66’ depth. This lift station is a “duplex” system, with two 4 horsepower (HP) Flygt Submersible pumps sitting ready at the bottom of the wet well. These pumps will be triggered by a Logic Relay that will receive signals from either the primary or secondary level sensors.

Wastewater Lift Station Design

This lift station has both primary and secondary level sensors, a redundancy that will ensure that the lift station will continue to function even if one level sensor fails. Redundancies such as this are an important safety measure, especially when the area around the lift station is inhabited. The primary level sensor in the system is a pressure transducer that measures the amount of waste in the wet well by the pressure produced by the water. The secondary level sensors are NOLTA MS1 floats which are suited for a wet well environment and resistant to the compounds in the wastes.

In addition to the pre-cast wet well that was supplied on this project, a pre-cast valve vault was also supplied for easy access to the valves for maintenance. The valve vault also has a drain back that only allows the sewage to flow in one direction, preventing backups that could allow sewage to flow back towards the school.

Many lift stations are owned and operated by municipalities, but the Ontario Christian project is unique in that the Ontario Christian High School will be owning this lift station after the start-up of the system. This project is the result of cooperation between the high school, the City of Ontario, Formillus Architecture, TKE Engineering, KSG (Site Electrical Engineer), CCI, and Scorpion Backhoe. Romtec Utilities is proud to have been able to be a part of this project with these entities. After completion of the renovations, the Ontario High School will have a new facility that will be able to better serve their students and community.
