East Bay Municipal Utility District – Water Treatment Settling Pond
Project Description
Refurbishing a shut-down water treatment plant required a new pump station to pump high flows of water. The unique application drains water used in a cleaning process into a large settling pond. Solids settle out of the water and then clean water decants into the pump station. From there, 50 hp Ebara pumps in a duplex configuration pump the relatively clean water back up into the treatment facility where the water is treated to standards of drinking water. This system required an unusual design with a freestanding well of precast concrete and suspended discharge piping below a foot bridge. The pump station control panel was wired to fully integrate with the existing control system onsite.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District contacted Romtec Utilities for this new pump station. Although the project requirements were not typical, Romtec Utilities discussed the goals with EBMUD engineers, and a design was developed to meet the very specific needs of this project. The primary goal for EBMUD was to get the new water treatment plant operational as quickly as possible to meet the needs of a clean water shortage in California. This allowed EBMUD to quickly get the pump station it needed and move forward with operating the San Pablo Water Treatment Plant.
