Chobani, Inc. – Submersible Wastewater Lift Station
Project Description
Twin Falls, Idaho is a city in the south-central part of the state where the Snake River passes through. The Snake River Canyon is north of this city and this area is known for its scenic waterfalls. Boise, the capital of Idaho, is about two hours northwest.
Shoshone Falls is at the eastern end of the Snake River Canyon and on the north end of town is Perrine Coulee Falls which cascades over a cliff edge. Twin Falls, the city’s namesake, is upstream from Shoshone Falls. U.S. Route 93 runs north and south of this city, while U.S. Route 30 runs east and west and Interstate 84 further north.
This city has a population of 51,800 as the most recent census and is the county seat of Twin Falls County.
Several of the many attractions here include Rock Creek Park, Orton Botanical Garden, Centennial Waterfront Park, Snake River Canyon Rim Trail, Canyon Springs-Twin Falls Golf Club, and Shoshone Falls Park.
Chobani, Inc. contacted Romtec Utilities to design a wastewater lift station to be installed during the construction of the world’s largest yogurt plant, designed to be 1-million-square-feet. The installation of this plant created 300 permanent jobs in the area.
CH2M Hill (Civil Engineer) managed this project which also included building a pre-treatment facility for wastewater from the plant. CH2M Hill was organized in Corvallis, Oregon, but headquartered in Englewood, Colorado providing engineering services until the company was sold to the Jacobs Engineering Group.
Romtec Utilities was awarded the supply of the package lift station to pump wastewater from the plant to the pre-treatment facility.
The success of this project ultimately led Chobani and CH2M Hill to request a second lift station that was needed after expanding the plant in the design phase. Romtec Utilities worked with McAlvain Construction, Inc. (General Contractor) to get the designs approved and the lift station installed.
Romtec Utilities designed this packaged wastewater lift station to meet the medium sewage flows of this giant yogurt manufacturing plant.
This duplex lift station uses Ebara submersible centrifugal pumps designed for wastewater applications. The force main from this pump station to a pre-treatment facility is not long, creating low head conditions. The system valves are integrated into the discharge piping to simplify the design and lower the cost. An outdoor UL listed control panel is wall mounted to the side of the plant for easy, visible access.
The submersible wastewater lift station features a 4′ diameter wet well, 2″ discharge piping, and 80DVFMU61.5 EBARA pumps.
Romtec Utilities designs, manufactures, and supplies submersible wastewater lift stations and integrated wastewater lift stations for a variety of manufacturing plants all over the country. We also provide pumping systems for stormwater, industrial process water, potable water, and others. This project was an honor to be a part of as Chobani created the largest yogurt plant in the world in Twin Falls, Idaho.
