Gregory, Texas, Temporary Wastewater Lift Stations
Romtec Utilities supplied six pressure reducing valve assemblies for a temporary wastewater lift station at Gulf Coast Growth Ventures, a facility jointly owned by SABIC and ExxonMobil.
The Need for Temporary Wastewater Lift Stations and PRVs
During the construction of a new petroleum refining facility in Gregory, Texas, the need arose for temporary wastewater lift stations for job site restrooms. Romtec supplied six pressure reducing valve (PRV) assemblies to help reduce pressure from the temporary pump stations to the main force.
Temporary wastewater systems are critical during the facility’s construction, providing reliable wastewater control and ensuring infrastructure protection as operations ramp up. The challenge is that multiple lift stations are feeding into a shared force main and without regulating pressure, there are major risks. Without PRV, the pressure would change as each pump station starts and stops pumping. If multiple systems are pumping simultaneously, it could skyrocket the pressure inside the force main.
Romtec Utilities designed six pressure-reducing valve assemblies to manage pressure fluctuations and protect the force main. Each PRV system reduces higher upstream pressure to a stable, controlled downstream pressure, ensuring safe and consistent performance.
The Design of the Temporary Station
The Romtec Utilities designed PRV systems were created to handle a capacity of 450 gallons per minute at a total dynamic head of 15.8 feet. This ensured the temporary wastewater lift stations were able to effectively manage flow, while minimizing the risks of fluctuating pressures. The system is designed to withstand tough environments and ensures consistent pressure regardless of demand or upstream force.
The pre-packaged Romtec Utilities PRV systems incorporate the use of pressure reducing valves, air release valves, check valves, and ball valves. Fiberglass structures surround each system above the ground to provide protection from the elements. The structures are open on each side for easy maintenance access.
Romtec Utilities provided pump station design and engineering for the project while also being the package pump station supplier and package pump station manufacturer. Romtec provided on-site services as the construction adviser and start-up management for this project.
GCGV Usage of Temporary Wastewater Pump Station
SABIC and ExxonMobil created the first U.S.-based joint venture called Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV), a manufacturing facility in Gregory, Texas. Commercial operations at GCGV started in late 2021 and the parent companies officially cut the ribbon on the facility in March 2022.
Romtec Utilities supplied its PRV systems to Eggelhof, Inc. while ExxonMobil was the end owner of the system. Eggelhof, Inc. specializes in protecting critical plant equipment and purification of process medias.
ExxonMobil is an American multi-national oil and gas corporation headquartered in Houston, Texas. It is the largest non-government-owned company in the energy industry and produces around 3% of the world’s oil and approximately 2% of the world’s energy. SABIC, the joint-owner of GCGV, is a global leader in diversified chemicals, headquartered in Saudi Arabia.
Impact of the Location
Gregory, Texas, is at the intersection of Highway 361, Highway 35, and Highway 181 in South Patricio County. This strategic location provides easy access to transportation routes vital for both supply chain logistics and distribution once the facility is fully operational.
The proximity to the Gulf Coast means the region is home to a growing number of industrial and petrochemical operations. The GCGV facility is one of the most significant investments in the area’s industrial landscape in recent years. The multi-billion dollar project is expected to produce essential chemical products used in everyday life, while also creating thousands of local jobs.
These decisions are improving the city’s infrastructure, services, and public education, according to the town’s website. From its inception over a century ago, Gregory has continually proven to be a friendly, hometown community and welcoming to new industry in the surrounding areas.
Long Lasting Effect
While the temporary wastewater lift stations and PRVs at the GCGV job site were put in place only for the construction of the new refinery, their functionality will have a significant impact on the progress that can be made at the facility over the coming years.
These temporary pump stations ensure construction can proceed without interruption, while protecting vital infrastructure from pressure damage and maintaining consistent system performance. With expertly designed pressure reducing valve assemblies, robust construction, and a full-service approach that includes engineering, manufacturing, and on-site support, Romtec Utilities has delivered a solution that meets the high demands of this major project.
