Russel City Energy Center – Demineralized Process Water Pumping System
Project Description
Romtec Utilities designed and supplied an industrial pumping system for an energy center located in Hayward, California. The pumping system handles demineralized process water that is produced from the combined cycle power production process. This pumping application required stainless steel piping throughout the system and vertical turbine pumps arranged in a duplex configuration to handle the high temperatures and causticity of the water being conveyed. Valve assemblies are skid mounted with air release valves to discharge any air that has made its way into the system. Water volumes in the vault are detected using mechanical floats selected for their robust qualities and resistance against high temperatures. Electrical controls for the pump station were designed using a flexible logic relay controller and installed inside a durable NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure for protection.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities was contacted to help on the design of an industrial pump station that would handle demineralized process water at the Russel City Energy Center in Hayward, California. Romtec Utilities has designed systems for similar applications with heat recovery steam generators and was familiar with the design requirements for handling caustic hot water. Advision, the site engineer working on this project, collaborated with Romtec Utilities providing site-specific details necessary to design the pump station. Calpine is the owner of the energy center and handled the installation of the pump station themselves with a construction advisor onsite representing Romtec Utilities. Once installation was completed, Romtec Utilities sent a start-up technician to the job site to commission the system while providing training to operating personnel.
