University of California Merced – Chopper Pump Sewer Lift Station
Project Description
The University of California, Merced needed a new wastewater lift station for the expansion of its campus. Two 20 hp Vaughan chopper pumps were included to meet the high flow requirements. The lift station control panel is a Zelio Smart Relay, and it uses a pressure transducer to sense liquid levels inside the wet well. Pressure transducers function great in turbulent water conditions, but these conditions can cause cavitation inside submersible pumps, potentially causing damage. To prevent this, a deflector panel was installed it the invert line in to reduce turbulence in the wet well. Additionally, two more in-ground vaults compose this lift station. One vaults contains the operation valves, and the other includes below-grade explosion-proof junction boxes.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Rockwell Engineering worked with Romtec Utilities to design this new lift station. The new lift station needed to include several design criteria, including robust chopper pumps and an in-ground junction box. Romtec Utilities got the design approved and manufactured a lift station to meet all design requirements. W. M. Lyles Co., the project contractor installed the complete lift station. After it was installed, the lift station was commissioned by a Romtec Utilities start-up technician, and on-site training for operations personnel was also provided. Romtec Utilities was able to meet all design requirements from each organization working on this project.
