Wastewater Lift Station Project Description
The Mt. Solo residential lift station was for a new housing development by Hinton Development in Longview, Washington.
Longview is about a 50-minute drive to Vancouver, Washington which borders Portland, Oregon across the Columbia River. The area is known for the Nutty Narrows Bridge, which is designed for squirrels to cross a 60-foot span.
The Mt. Solo Place housing development is a beautiful countryside community of new single-family homes. This community offers proximity to great shopping, golf courses and parks like Lake Sacajawea Park and Roy Morse Park for baseball, basketball, soccer field and a disc golf course. The development is close to the Columbia River along Interstate 5.
The neighborhood features family-friendly activities like a playground, picnic shelter, and walking trails for an active, outdoor lifestyle.
The City of Longview is the end owner of the lift station while SGA Engineering was the civil engineer for this project. SGA brought Romtec Utilities this lift station as we have also worked with SGA on the Ridgefield Heights Subdivision and Barnett-Curtin Creek projects.
Hinton Development was the land developer, while Lennar was the home builder for the community. Hinton is based out of Vancouver, WA and provides general contractor and land development services. Lennar is one of the largest home construction companies in the United States.
Rotschy Inc. was the installing contractor of the Mt. Solo lift station that utilized Caisson construction of the wet well. Rotschy is headquartered in Vancouver, WA and has been in the construction business since 1988.
Caisson construction of a wet well involves the placing of an open base, sectional wet well structure with a “cutting shoe” attached as a part of the bottom section. In Caisson installation, the wet well base is placed at or just below grade, and the hole is excavated through the wet well itself.
As the wet well sinks or is pushed into the ground, sections are added on top to push the wet well further and to the depth required to house the entire wet well structure. Once the entire well is installed, the base of the wet well is poured into place.
The Caisson method is generally used on job sites with high groundwater, granular silt, sand, or gravel. For these locations, Caisson installation can help save money and time by removing the need for expensive shoring or dewatering of the sump.
