Chobani, Inc. – Integrated Wastewater Lift Station
Project Description
Twin Falls is home to some of the most scenic waterfalls in southern Idaho which include, Twin Falls itself, Shoshone Falls, and Pillar Falls. This city is also known for several spectacular feats that have taken place over the years.
One of the most prominent feats occurred when Evel Knievel tried to jump over Snake River Canyon in 1974 on a steam powered rocket. The jump site was between Shoshone Falls and the Perrine Bridge. Globally, Perrine Bridge is one of the few manmade structures where BASE jumping is legal.
Another feat accomplished in Twin Falls, was when Chobani constructed the largest yogurt manufacturing plant in the world.
Twin Falls is the county seat and the largest city within Twin Falls County. In the Magic Valley region, it’s the largest city in a 100-mile radius with a population over 51,000 in the 2020 census. U.S. Route 30 and U.S. Route 93 connect Twin Falls, Idaho to the surrounding states like Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
Romtec Utilities was chosen for this additional lift station because CH2M Hill (Civil Engineer) and Chobani, Inc. were happy with the services provided by Romtec Utilities during the design of the first lift station. This lift station needed to be designed and supplied in a short timeframe since the Chobani yogurt plant had started construction.
McAlvain Construction, Inc. the general contractor, and Romtec Utilities, worked quickly to get the plans finalized and approved through a CH2M Hill engineering review. After approval, Romtec Utilities provided an on-site installation advisor to assist with fast and trouble-free installation for both lift stations.
A second lift station was added shortly after the plans for the Chobani, Inc. manufacturing facility revealed larger flows of wastewater. Similar to the first, this lift station uses two submersible centrifugal pumps to discharge effluent to a pre-treatment facility. The force main length to the pre-treatment facility created low head conditions with medium pumping flows. The system valves are integrated into the discharge pumping to simplify the design and lower the cost, and a simple wall mounted control panel provides uncomplicated system controls. This integrated wastewater lift station features a 4′ diameter wet well, 2″ discharge piping, and Goulds pumps that can pump 83 gallons per minute.
The challenge with this second lift station was integrating it into a system and plant that was under construction all while being under a tight timeline to keep the project moving forward. Romtec Utilities was able to move quickly through the design phase while meeting all requirements to get the second wastewater lift station approved to proceed with the construction.
Romtec Utilities designs, manufactures, and supplies pumping systems for a variety of water types and industries across the country. Integrated wastewater lift stations, submersible wastewater lift stations, and other pumping systems are Romtec Utilities’ specialty. If you need an integrated wastewater lift station like this one for the Chobani yogurt plant in Twin Falls, Idaho, contact us today where we can design a system to integrate into an existing building.
