City of Bakersfield – Residential Wastewater Lift Station Retrofit
Project Description
A residential neighborhood in Bakersfield, California needed to upgrade an existing Romtec Utilities lift station to keep up with increasing sewer flows. To meet the higher flow requirements, Romtec Utilities upgraded the existing 7.5 hp pumps to 12 HP Flygt submersible pumps in a duplex configuration. The lift station’s design includes the use of Flygt mix flush valves on the new pumps. Mix flush valves divert a small current within the wet well to churn the water, preventing the buildup of FOG (Fats, Oils, and Greases) and other solids in the sump. Additionally, the system control panel was upgraded to more robust, modern electrical controls.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Delmarter and Associates contacted Romtec Utilities for the design of a retrofit. Upgrading pump stations is not uncommon, and since Romtec Utilities provided the original system, it was equipped to handle upgrades without replacing the wet well or any of the components in the valve vault. When the design for the retrofit was complete, Oriole Homes, the owner, purchased the system directly from Romtec Utilities and contracted Sierra Construction and Witcher Electric to install the retrofit package. Using an experienced pump station engineer like Romtec Utilities for both the initial design and the retrofit allowed this developer to upgrade its system components without any need to replace the entire lift station.
