Basin Electric Power Cooperative – Clean Water Industrial Pumping
Project Description
Groton is a city in northeastern South Dakota in Brown County. It’s a smaller city with a population of around 1,500 people.
The City of Groton is located on U.S. Route 12 which heads east to Minnesota which is about 90 minutes away. State Route 37 heads north leading to North Dakota which is about 30 minutes away.
This city offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities like the Olive Grove Golf Course, Locke/Karst Field, the Missouri River which runs through the state, Black Hills National Forest, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, and Badlands National Park.
Local points of interest include a swimming pool, business district, ice skating rink, sports complex, various sports courts, and parks.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative contacted Romtec Utilities to design, manufacture, and supply this industrial water reuse lift station for the new construction of this power generation plant in South Dakota.
The Groton Generation Station, Basin Electric’s first peaking station, has two generating units for power supply. Each 95-megawatt unit is powered by a simple cycle gas turbine that creates power for the Basin Electric Power Cooperative which serves several states in the Midwest. It is fueled by natural gas supplied by the Dakota Gasification Company via the Northern Border Pipeline.
Romtec Utilities designed the lift station to handle process water that would circulate between cooling components, stainless steel holding tanks, and an overflow pond at the Groton Generation Station.
The electrical controls for the lift station included additional controls for level sensing in the stainless-steel holding tanks. The Romtec Utilities panel controls operational valves based on tank level to direct water to holding, overflow, or treatment.
These advanced industrial controls were integrated into the lift station controls for cycling pump starts and stops on the level. Romtec Utilities also provided an on-site construction advisor, start-up services, training, and a full system warranty.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative liked the ability of Romtec Utilities to design, manufacture, and supply this clean water industrial pumping system as we have a lot of experience with these types of projects.
This South Dakota generation station needed this package lift station to pump clean water as a part of its power generating processes from natural gas.
The submersible centrifugal pumps in a duplex configuration meet the pumping requirements for this facility and discharge the water to parallel force mains.
A precast concrete, below-grade valve vault holds the system valves and pressure gauges. An outdoor control panel runs electrical conduit to a disconnect panel. Two conductive probes are used for primary liquid level-sensing and backup sensing.
Romtec Utilities was pleased to be a part of this package lift station to pump clean water as a part of the Groton Generation Station power generating processes from natural gas. We have a ton of experience working with clean water industrial pumping that circulates between cooling systems, stainless steel holding tanks, and an overflow pond.
