Cocoa, Florida – Private Wastewater Lift Station
Romtec Utilities partnered on the Brevard Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility in Cocoa, Florida, to design and supply a private wastewater lift station serving an industrial renewable energy operation. The system was engineered exclusively to manage facility wastewater – not the renewable natural gas production process – ensuring dependable wastewater conveyance while protecting sensitive production infrastructure.
The project required a durable, compact, and highly reliable private sewage lift station that could support continuous industrial operations under an accelerated construction schedule. Romtec Utilities delivered a fully integrated wastewater pumping system that included the wet well, valve vault, pumping equipment, and electrical control package. Every component was designed to meet the project’s performance requirements, site conditions, and operational goals.

A Private Wastewater Lift Station at a Renewable Energy Site
The Brevard RNG Facility is in Cocoa within Brevard County on Florida’s east coast. This region is known for its growing focus on sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy development, and environmentally responsible industrial projects.
Cocoa’s location provides access to major transportation routes, utilities, and industrial zoning, making it well suited for renewable energy facilities. Located along Florida’s Space Coast near Orlando and Cape Canaveral, Cocoa is a growing hub for industrial and renewable energy development.
The warm climate, flat terrain, and coastal environment also influence how infrastructure systems – such as a private wastewater lift station – must be designed. Equipment must withstand moisture, corrosion risks, and continuous use without disrupting daily operations.
Because this wastewater system serves only the facility and not the surrounding community, it was designed as a private wastewater lift station, tailored specifically to the site’s needs rather than municipal standards.
The Unique Conditions of a Renewable Natural Gas Facility
A renewable natural gas facility converts organic waste into usable energy. These facilities operate continuously and rely on tightly controlled processes. While wastewater is not part of the energy production itself, it is still generated by daily facility operations, maintenance activities, and employee use.
What makes renewable gas facilities unique is their need for reliable support systems. Any failure in wastewater handling can interrupt operations, create safety concerns, or impact environmental compliance. For this reason, private wastewater infrastructure at these facilities must be dependable, redundant, and easy to maintain.
This is why the Brevard facility required a dedicated private wastewater lift station that operates independently from public systems and remain separate from the renewable natural gas process flow.
Private Wastewater Lift Station Design Specifics
The private wastewater lift station includes a 4-foot diameter wet well paired with a dedicated valve vault. Separating pumping and valving components for improved maintenance access and operational reliability.
All structural components were designed and supplied by Romtec Utilities to match the project’s design criteria and elevations. The system layout supports efficient influent handling and controlled discharge to the force main, with all internal piping, guide rails, and appurtenances coordinated as part of the complete Romtec Utilities packaged system.
Pumping Equipment
The lift station utilized redundant Ebara submersible pumps arranged in a duplex configuration. Each pump is sized to deliver the full design flow independently, providing operational redundancy and protection against downtime. Key pumping characteristics:
- Duplex pump configuration
- Single-pump duty operation with automation lead/lag alternation
- Design pumping rate of approximately 28 GPM
- Total dynamic head of approximately 97 feet
This configuration ensures reliable wastewater conveyance while minimizing pump wear and maximizing service life.
Electrical Controls
Romtec Utilities supplied a Tier 1B control panel designed for industrial wastewater applications. The panel includes:
- 480V, 3-phase power per project specifications
- Generator receptacle with interlock provisions for temporary backup power
- Dry contact outputs for integration into the facility’s central plant control and monitoring system
- Duplex pump control with automatic alternation and alarm functions
The control system supports both automatic and manual operation modes, enabling efficient startup, maintenance, and troubleshooting while aligning with the plant’s overall operational philosophy.
Challenges of a Private Wastewater Lift Station
Several challenges shaped the design and delivery of this private wastewater lift station:
- Fast-track schedule: Civil construction was already underway when Romtec Utilities was engaged. Equipment delivery was targeted for April 2025, with operational startup required by July 2025.
- Industrial reliability requirements: As part of a renewable energy facility, the wastewater system needed redundancy, alarm integration, and compatibility with a centralized plan control system.
- Private system constraints – The lift station serves only on-site facility flows, requiring precise sizing without municipal safety factors or future growth assumptions.
Romtec Utilities’ Solution for a Private Wastewater Lift Station
The Brevard RNG facility lift station shows Romtec Utilities’ ability to support fast-moving industrial infrastructure projects with engineered wastewater solutions that balance reliability, constructability, and schedule certainty.
By providing a complete, pre-engineered wastewater pumping system designed specifically for a private renewable energy facility, Romtec Utilities helped Keeley Construction and SCS Energy maintain progress on a tight construction timeline while ensuring long-term operation performance.
Project Partners
SCS Energy served as both the design engineer of record for the lift station and the formal reviewer of the Romtec Utilities submittal. The Romtec Utilities design package was reviewed as a standalone system, allowing for a streamlined approval process independent of other site infrastructure packages.
Brevard Energy Holdings is the end owner of the facility, overseeing the development and long-term operation of the renewable energy site. Keeley Construction served as the civil and installing contractor, coordinating on-site construction and system installation. This collaboration allowed each party to focus on their expertise while keeping the project moving forward.
