Eden, North Carolina – HRSG Blowdown Water Pump Station
For this HRSG blowdown water pump station, we designed a pump system to meet the needs of this natural gas combined cycle turbine power plant. We worked with HDR to design and supply the HRSG blowdown water pump station to meet the exact needs of this power plant, while designing it to last in the caustic pumping environment.
Our team has worked with a variety of HRSG blowdown water pump stations that ensure the HRSG has the proper water and steam quality by removing concentrated impurities that come from the system and the hot water.
Eden, North Carolina is a city in Rockingham County within the Greensboro-High Point metropolitan area.
The population of Eden was 15,405 as of the 2020 census. U.S. Route 311 and State Route 14 connect Eden with the surrounding areas. Greensboro is 35 miles to the south.
Romtec Utilities worked with Brown & Morrison on this project for a new blowdown water pump station for the old Dan River Steam Station in North Carolina. Charlotte, North Carolina is a major city that is home to a lot of commercial activity, in the southwest part of the state located on the South Carolina border.
Combined Cycle Blowdown Water Pump Station
The Dan River Steam Station is a power plant in Eden, North Carolina. The plant features natural gas combustion and combined cycle turbines. There was a coal fired power plant that ended its operation in 2012 at the Dan River Steam Station.
During the combined cycle gas turbine power production process, there is a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), that has to maintain the water chemistry and pumping needs that prevent corrosion and maintain steam purity within the plant. The blowdown water pump station is critical to the operation of the HRSG as it has impurities that need to be recycled, treated, or discharged.
Eden, North Carolina is in Rockingham County where the Smith River and Dan River flow through the city.
The city is home to the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA and the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.
Caustic Blowdown Pump System
Brown & Morrison, a Xylem pump rep, contacted Romtec Utilities about this project for a new blowdown pump station at the old Dan River Steam Station.
Brown & Morrison was originally contacted by HDR for pump pricing and connected them to Romtec Utilities for the design. HDR, Inc. provided the preliminary design criteria for this blowdown system, and Romtec Utilities provided a satisfactory design and quote for its project.
Brown & Morrison is a leading supplier of process equipment solutions to many customers in the municipal and industrial markets, based out of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Working together with the owner, Romtec Utilities and HDR developed an approved design for this power-generating establishment. We provided full start-up and training services for this station to the power company staff in North Carolina.
HDR is an engineering and design firm based out of Omaha, Nebraska.
A large power company replaced the former facility with a new gas fired power plant and needed a new pump station to handle medium flows of blow down water from the heat recovery steam generator.
Heat Recovery Steam Generator Blowdown Pump Station
The Flygt pumps specified for this project were stainless steel and suitable for corrosive and very hot water conditions that are typical with blow down systems. The design also called for all the discharge piping to be designed and supplied with stainless steel. Liquid-level sensing was supplied with NOLTA floats designed for corrosive and hot water environments. The controller was supplied as an Allen Bradley PLC configured for a duplex pumping system.
For this Combined Cycle Blow Down Pumping at this power plant located in Eden, North Carolina this pump design featured 8′ diameter wet well, 4″ discharge piping, Flygt DP8053MT pumps, and a 4″ 577 valve vault.
It can pump up to 300 gallons per minute with a total dynamic head of 20’.
Romtec Utilities engineers pumping systems capable of handling the extremely hot water produced by Heat Recovery Steam Generators. Our designs specify and integrate heat resistant components that stand up to the water conditions for this application.
Not every HRSG is the same, and the necessary pumping systems for these water conveyance projects can also change from plant to plant. Whether it’s handling water from other inlet lines or pumping to force mains for reuse circulation or treatment, we will meet your exact project needs.
