Portland International Airport – Parking Structure Stormwater Pump Station
Project Description
The construction of a new multi-level parking garage at the Portland International Airport (PDX) required a stormwater pump station to handle high flows of stormwater. Due to the nature of this historic tideland, brackish groundwater required special design considerations for the pump station. Tnemec epoxy coating and Conseal sealant were applied to the wet well structure to protect the concrete and prevent groundwater incursion to the sump. Romtec Utilities used 25hp Flygt submersible pumps installed in a triplex configuration. This design meets the necessary constant flow requirements of this application and provides the system with redundancy. Flygt ENM floats detect the active volume of stormwater with a sensor probe for backup level-sensing. Electrical controls for this system consist of a UL listed panel installed inside a NEMA 3R painted steel enclosure.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities designed, engineered, and manufactured the stormwater pump station for a new parking lot at Portland International Airport. Using site data provided by HNTB Corporation, the civil engineer, we designed a powerful stormwater pump station to handle the anticipated stormwater flows and the brackish groundwater conditions. Persistent high levels of groundwater from the adjacent river and ocean made the installation of this pump station a challenge. The contractor who performed the installation, Weitman Excavation, performed extensive dewatering throughout the construction of the system. When the system was completed and ready for start-up, a Romtec Utilities technician travelled to the job site to commission the system and provide testing and training services for the owners and operators at PDX.
