Exelon West Medway Generating Station – Power Plant Pumping Systems
Project Description
A large power generating plant in Medway, Massachusetts required four new pump stations as part of an expansion project to produce more power for the region. Two of the four pumping systems are sanitary sewer lift stations and handle wastewater collected from the plant. The other two support industrial processes and are designed to handle oily wastewater. Weil submersible pumps suitable for the specific water chemistries were selected for each of these pump stations. Both of the sewer lift stations make use of slicer pumps to effectively macerate any solids that are encountered. The industrial pump stations have their operational valves mounted to an above grade skid where they can easily be accessed by personnel for maintenance. Alternator control panels were configured individually for all four of these duplex pumping configurations, and each was installed inside a NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
The expansion of the Exelon Medway Generating Station required four unique pump stations to support future operations. Each of these systems required a unique design to meet the specific flow rates and head requirements. Romtec Utilities was hired to provide the design, supply, and fabrication of these four systems by Gemma Power, the general contractor. We worked closely with Gemma Power and their design engineer, Mott Macdonald, to develop the pump station designs according to site-data gathered on location. Weir slicer pumps were necessary to meet the operational requirements of this application and the standards of Exelon, the owner of the power plant. Many of the mechanical assemblies in these systems were fabricated at the Romtec Utilities production yard prior to delivery so they could be installed quickly and easily. Once complete, Romtec Utilities delivered each system where it was installed with an installation advisor present to answer any questions related to the system. Romtec Utilities then provided start-up, testing, and training services once the system was ready to be commissioned.
