Basin Electric Power Cooperative – Industrial Wastewater Pumping
Project Description
Culbertson is a small town in northeast Montana located in Roosevelt County.
This town sits on U.S. Route 2 which connects it to North Dakota, 23 miles to the east. The Canadian border can be reached by taking State Route 16 (Theodore Roosevelt Expressway) about 70 minutes north. The population was 753 in 2020.
The Missouri River flows east past this rural town. Some of the attractions include Culbertson Swimming Pool, Ike’s Fishing Pond and Hiking Trail, Bruegger Centennial Park, Culbertson Museum, CC Recreation Complex, and Medicine Lake National Park Wildlife Refuge. The Big Sky Field Airport is a public use airport just north of town.
The Basin Electric Power Cooperative fulfills the electricity needs for rural members across several US states, and the Culbertson Generation Station was built to meet the power demands of the Cooperative members.
This generation station is a natural gas-fueled peaking unit and it’s the Basin Electrical Power Cooperatives first power plant in Montana. It is located near a compressor station on the Northern Border Pipeline. This facility uses natural gas from Basin Electric’s subsidiary, Dakota Gasification Company, via the pipeline, to spin its turbine.
This gas turbine provides about 95 megawatts of peaking capacity to the region. Since this station was built for increasing demand for those in the Williston Basin, it’s capable of being modified to use fuel oil in the future.
Romtec Utilities partnered with The Industrial Company (TIC) Wyoming, Inc. to design the industrial wastewater lift station for this plant. The Industrial Company provides high-level construction services to major industrial clients in diverse markets across North America. They opened in 1974 and are based out of Lone Tree, Colorado.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative and TIC plans were ambitious; the entire plant was to be operational in 14 months from the start of construction. Romtec Utilities worked quickly to generate appropriate designs and system capabilities for meeting sophisticated industrial standards, while also meeting the schedule of TIC and Basin Electrical Power Cooperative.
This power generation facility installed a package lift station designed for medium flows of industrial wastewater. To protect the submersible solids-handling pumps, an inlet line deflector panel was included in the design.
The wet well was protected from off-gassing and corrosion by an interlocking fiberglass lining. Conductive probes are used for primary and backup liquid level-sensing with an outdoor UL listed control panel. The panel is outfitted with a basic alarm and an auto-dialer for telecommunications.
The industrial wastewater lift station features a 6′ diameter wet well, 3″ discharge piping, CP3085 Flygt pumps, and a 3″ 577 valve vault.
Romtec Utilities was proud to be a part of this power plant project in Culbertson, Montana for the Basin Electrical Power Cooperative while providing the design, manufacture, and supply of this industrial wastewater pumping system.
