Metro East Sanitary District – Municipal Sewer Lift Stations
Project Description
Granite City, Illinois is a city in Madison County that sits within the St. Louis metropolitan area. It’s located to the east of the Mississippi River, Missouri, and Gabaret Island.
The population of this city was 27,549 at the 2020 census. Nearby attractions include Horseshoe Lake, Tri-City Speedway, the Legacy Golf Course, Wilson Park, and the Granite City Soccer Complex.
Wilson Park features a pool, ice rink, park office, skate park, food and beverage stand, tennis courts, several pavilions, baseball fields, and a wedding area.
Interstate 270 passes through Granite City while Interstates 255, 70, 55, and 64 are all within a few miles of the city.
Metro East Sanitary District in Illinois issued an RFP for Eagle Park Acres neighborhood, where two lift stations were going as the neighborhood was being developed.
The Metro East Sanitary District operates and keeps up levees on the Mississippi River along with providing wastewater treatment services to the Granite City area and Metro East region. The area has seen some major floods over the years, which is why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the levee system to provide flood protection.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities used the bidder’s list and proposed the pricing for designing, manufacturing, and supplying these lift stations.
The winning bidder, H&M Backhoe Service, used Romtec Utilities’ pricing to configure its winning bid. H&M Backhoe provides general contracting, along with water and sewer mains and is based out of Illinois.
Romtec Utilities then worked with H&M Backhoe Service to finalize the scope of supply and services to clearly define the roles.
We sent design documents and proposals to Juneau Associates and the US Army Corps of Engineers for final design approval. H&M Backhoe Services bought and installed both packaged lift stations. After they were installed, a Romtec Utilities technician travelled to the job site to provide start-up services and training for the Metro East Sanitary District.
Eagle Park Acres new pump systems were designed to handle medium sewage flow requirements.
The submersible solids-handling pumps in duplex configurations were specified to handle influent from three inlet lines from different sections of the neighborhood.
The below-grade valve assemblies hold the system operation valves, bypass pumping ports, and shut-off valves. The outdoor UL listed control panels utilize pressure transducers and redundant float controls for liquid level-sensing; basic alarms were included for communications.
The design featured a 6′ DIAMETER WET WELL, 4″ DISCHARGE PIPING, NP3085 FLYGT We were pleased to provide these two municipal sewers lift stations for a large neighborhood in the Granite City, Illinois area that falls within the Metro East Sanitary District.
Romtec Utilities designs, manufactures, and supplies pump systems all over the country for a variety of water types and different kinds of developments. Our team of engineers can design a pump system to meet the exact pumping needs and specifications to meet a project’s requirements.
