City of Shafter – Sewer Lift Station Replacement
Project Description
The City of Shafter in California needed a new sewer lift station to replace an existing system with out-of-date components. The new system includes 3 hp Flygt pumps in a duplex configuration for pump cycling and redundancy. The underground wet well and valve vault were fabricated with precast concrete and included preassembly for easy on-site installation and precast pedestrian rated hatches. A pressure transducer serves as the primary level-sensing device with a probe providing emergency backup. Electrical controls comprise a PLC controller, and auto dialer for telemetry, and a NEMA 3R enclosure with painted steel for outdoor weather protection.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
The City of Shafter and Romtec Utilities worked together on several previous sewer lift station projects, including a lift station replacement. When the City needed to replace another aging lift station, it contacted Romtec Utilities for the design of the replacement. The site for the existing lift station had size limitations that restricted certain style of construction to install the new lift station. Romtec Utilities worked with the City and its contractor, Sierra Construction Inc., to engineer the system so that it could be installed within the site restrictions. Sierra Construction used a modified culvert pipe to create shoring that mimicked a caisson style of construction. Romtec Utilities provided an on-site technician to provide advice during the construction process. Then, we concluded with start-up services and training for the City to operate its new system.
