Hanford Site – Top Slab Retrofits
Project Description
A secure Department of Energy facility in Richland, Washington required multiple top slabs to retrofit existing pump stations. Romtec Utilities designed and supplied 7 custom slabs with hatches suitable for the specific conditions of each pump station, including industrial process water and wastewater. Each of the top slabs were cast around an aluminum access hatch with an orange safety grate. The safety grates provide fall protection while granting operating personnel vision into the interior of the wet wells. Additionally, one pump station required replacement parts for several other in well components. Romtec Utilities replaced pumps with new slicer pumps to macerate solids into a passable size. Level sensors were also replaced with ultrasonic transducers.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
The Hanford Site is a decommissioned nuclear production facility that is operated by the United States Department of Energy. Romtec Utilities had supplied a site-specific pump station for this facility back in 2008 and was contacted again to retrofit top slabs on several other existing systems. This is a secure facility and required that Romtec Utilities work through a certified supplier to purchase the top slabs directly. We worked with MSA on this project, who are responsible for the maintenance and safety of the site. The new top slabs were drawn and fabricated using measurements provided from the existing systems. Complete documentation was provided for each of the replacement parts, including engineering drawings and product data sheets.
