Aliamanu Military Reservation and Project Background

The Aliamanu Military Reservation is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. Positioned between Fort Shafter and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the military reservation serves as a residential community for service members and their families.

In addition to housing, the community includes housing, recreational amenities, and shared facilities that support daily living for military personnel. As a result, dependable infrastructure systems are essential for maintaining reliable service.

Part of the project involved replacing an existing wastewater lift station that served the development. Aqua Engineers worked on behalf of the U.S. Army in Hawaii and engaged Romtec Utilities to help finalize the system design and develop an efficient site plan for installation

One key project requirement involved meeting the design standards established by the City and County of Honolulu. Although the pumping system serves a military facility, designing the military sewer pump station to local municipal standards helps ensure compatibility with surrounding infrastructure.

Military Sewer Pump Station Design for a Developed Site

For this project, the team needed a military sewer pump station capable of replacing the existing system while fitting within a developed site with limited available space. Because the new station needed to be installed adjacent to existing infrastructure, site layout and coordination were critical.

Romtec Utilities worked closely with Aqua Engineers on the design and to determine the most effective placement for the new lift station. Planning accounted for existing utilities, nearby housing, and access limitations within the reserve.

Once the team finalized the design, Aqua Engineers selected Romtec Utilities to provide the complete packaged pump station. The package included major system components, engineering plans, and coordinated delivery to Hawaii.

With a packaged pump station approach, the project team streamlined procurement, coordinated equipment compatibility, and reduced construction complexity for the Honolulu wastewater infrastructure replacement.

Military Wastewater Lift Station Components and Function

Romtec Utilities designed the military sewer pump station to provide reliable wastewater service for residential flows within the Aliamanu Military Reservation community. Key components for the pump system support consistent operation, maintenance access, and long-term performance.

To accomplish this the system utilizes submersible centrifugal pumps designed to handle medium municipal wastewater flows. This configuration provides dependable operation while maintaining a straightforward and serviceable layout.

To support the collection system, the lift station includes a 6-foot-diameter wet well, 3-inch discharge piping, and a valve vault that houses critical system components. The station also connects to an existing 6-inch gravity sewer line, allowing seamless integration with surrounding infrastructure.

Conductive probes for both primary and backup level sensing are used in the control system. Meanwhile, an outdoor control panel manages pump operation and includes an auto-dialer for remote notifications. Together, these features allow the system to operate automatically while alerting personnel when service is required.

To strengthen system resilience, the design also incorporated an above-grade backup generator that helps maintain wastewater service during power outages.

Meeting Honolulu Design Standards and Site Constraints

This military sewer pump station required careful planning to address both site limitations and design requirements.

Existing housing, roads, and underground utilities limited available space for construction. Because the original lift station remained operational during the project, the replacement system had to be positioned carefully to avoid disruptions.
