City of Los Angeles – Venice Dual Force Main Lift Station
Project Description
The City of Los Angeles needed to construct a new 54” force main to increase sewer capacity and add redundancy to an existing 48” force main at Marina del Rey. The massive vaults used with this force main, combined with a high groundwater table and I&I made drainage a requirement. Romtec Utilities designed, engineered, and manufactured a pump station to handle wastewater drainage for these vault structures. The water collected in the vaults is considered wastewater due to “first flush” scenarios where groundwater includes high surface contamination. The lift station handles medium flows of wastewater with a simplex 3 hp Ebara vortex pump. NOLTA floats in the wet well provide liquid level-sensing. Electrical controls in a NEMA 4x stainless steel enclosure were installed in a large vault.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
The City of L.A.’s existing 48” force main was originally installed in 1960 and has been in operation ever since. The new force main will provide redundancy, increase sewer capacity, and allow for a separate force main to be temporarily shut down while maintenance is performed. Romtec Utilities provided the design and supply of this wastewater lift station suitable for pumping accumulated water in three separate vault structures to treatment. The general contractor, L. H. Woods & Sons, purchased the packaged lift station directly from Romtec Utilities and performed the installation. The majority of the new force main was installed by boring underground to reduce the disruption from construction. Romtec Utilities sent an onsite technician to provide start-up services and commission the system. The technician also held two-days of training for owners & operators while commissioning the system.
