Paducah, Kentucky Industrial Power Plant Wastewater Lift Station
For this industrial power plant wastewater lift station, we partnered with Tennessee Valley Authority, to provide them with a complete industrial sewer pump system to meet their pumping needs at the Shawnee Fossil Plant in Paducah, Kentucky. The owner, TVA, wanted Romtec Utilities to provide their system because we had experience in the power generation industry with an industrial power plant wastewater lift station.
The wastewater lift station features Goulds submersible pumps inside the 23-foot sump. The system utilized a precast concrete valve vault.
Paducah, Kentucky is a city known as a home rule class city, on the northwest border of Kentucky along the confluence of the Tennessee River and the Ohio River near the border with Illinois.
Paducah is the county seat of McCracken County, Kentucky. Missouri is about 35 miles to the west of Paducah. The city is halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee. The population of Paducah was 27,137 as of the 2020 census.
The Shawnee Fossil Plant is in Paducah, Kentucky on nearly 1,700 acres about 10 miles northwest of Paducah near the confluence of the Ohio and the Cumberland rivers.
This plant has been providing electricity for the region since 1953 and has nine active units capable of generating 1,100 megawatts through the coal fired power plant.
Industrial Sewer Lift Station
This industrial power plant needed a package lift station to meet the requirements for municipal wastewater. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built, owns, and operates the power plant. The plant got its name from the Shawnee Native American tribe. TVA strives to reduce environmental impacts from burning coal. Its specialists continuously monitor air and water quality to ensure the health and safety of the public.
TVA has grown to become the nation’s largest provider of public power, after the U.S. Congress members worked with President Franklin D. Roosevelt to create the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933. Their mandate was to improve the standard of living of the people. It provides power to seven different states.
The 23-foot-deep sump holds duplex Goulds submersible sewage pumps specified to meet the 50 gallons per minute maximum flow requirements. A precast concrete valve vault contains the system valves and a force main junction. Both the below-grade wet well and valve vault are pedestrian rated. Liquid level-sensing controls are a pressure transducer and floats for backup. The outdoor control panel includes a receptacle for an owner supplied onsite generator.
The submersible pumps for moving stormwater or wastewater are a go-to. They can pump a wide range of gallons per minute and sit in the liquid that they pump.
The system during normal operations pumps 5 gallons per minute @ 67.7 Total Dynamic Head.
Power Plant Pump Station
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) contacted Romtec Utilities to design, manufacture, and supply this straightforward lift station for industrial wastewater at the Shawnee Fossil Plant.
Although the design for this lift station was straightforward, TVA preferred to hire a company with known experience in the power generation industry to meet its requirements.
Romtec Utilities also provided TVA with a substantial cost discount on the total price of the lift station through the Romtec Utilities’ GSA contract. These two qualities were important to TVA to ensure the success of this project at the Shawnee Fossil Plant, and Romtec Utilities was able to meet these expectations.
Power Plant Wastewater Lift Station
At Romtec Utilities we provided an onsite installation technician to help with the installation of the system. We provide commissioning of the system, along with training of maintenance personnel on the operations and controls of the system. On top of that, as the single source provider of the design, manufacture, and supply, we handle the robust warranty where we handle the entire process.
We have worked with a variety of power plant industry projects providing wastewater, stormwater, or industrial water pump stations for these projects all over the U.S. Our team of designers and engineers will work with your team of developers, owners, general contractors, engineers, and installing contractors to design a wastewater lift station that meets the pumping requirements of the power plant.
We have extensive experience working with the power plant industry to meet their pumping needs. Case in point when we worked with Tennessee Valley Authority, they chose us because of our experience in the power plant industry.
It was great to partner with TVA on this industrial power plant wastewater lift station, to provide the pumping needs for this power plant essential to the southeast power grid.
We can help you select the right pumps, components, controls, and piping for the pumping environment and site design. Selecting and designing the system with the right controls is essential based on how complex the system needs to be for monitoring the system along with the alarms and controls associated with it.
