Walmart in Gardnerville, Nevada – Stormwater Detention Pond Pumping
Project Description
Gardnerville is a small unincorporated town in western Nevada that sits along U.S. Route 395 near the California border.
Located in Douglas County, Gardnerville is next to the county seat called Minden. The population was 6,200 at the most recent census.
Lake Tahoe is about 18 miles west of Gardnerville which can be accessed via State Route 207, which is known as Kingsbury Grade that runs to Stateline, a community on the Nevada side of the lake.
The East Fork Carson River runs through this small town. Carson City is about 16 miles north and Reno is about 50 miles to the north. Various attractions in the area include Lampe Park, Stodick Park, Carson Valley Golf Course, and Mitch Park.
The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range sits just to the west, providing many peaks like Monument Peak and East Peak which overlook Lake Tahoe. These peaks provide skiing and hiking opportunities within the region.
Large commercial construction projects, such as this Walmart Supercenter in Gardnerville, often rely on multiple agencies.
Working with Pentacor Engineering (Civil E.) and Walmart, Romtec Utilities designed a “site specific” package pump station that met the pumping requirements and cost less than poured in place concrete.
Pentacor Engineering included the Romtec Utilities design and scope of supply and services in its bid specification. Romtec Utilities then worked with Atlas Contractors, the winning bidder, to get the design documents finalized and approved, while meeting its budget. In the end, Pentacor Engineering, Atlas Contractors, and Walmart had all their needs met by working with Romtec Utilities on this stormwater pump station.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
A new Walmart Supercenter required this package stormwater pump system to handle runoff from its large impervious parking lot. A good-sized detention basin collects the runoff water during a storm event, including from surrounding properties.
In addition, this area sees occasional snowfall during the winter months and snowmelt had to be considered when dealing with runoff.
EBARA submersible pumps then empty the detention pond at a high flow rate through just 45’ of force main into a gravity line that flows to treatment. An outdoor UL-listed control panel includes float controls for primary and backup liquid level-sensing and a basic alarm for communications.
The pump station features an 8′ diameter wet well, 6″ discharge pumping, and EBARA pumps while being able to pump up to 1,300 gallons per minute.
Romtec Utilities designed a stormwater pump system to empty the detention pond as it rises from storm events and to manage high flows when they happen. Romtec Utilities designs, manufactures, and supplies stormwater pump stations along with systems for wastewater, industrial water, and potable water.
Detention ponds can be a great way to divert stormwater away from a parking lot and then begin the pump process as the detention pond rises which this stormwater pump station does for the Walmart parking lot and surrounding businesses.
Romtec Utilities was proud to partner on this stormwater pumping system in Gardnerville, Nevada and provide the necessary resources for this Walmart shopping center.
