Brunswick, Georgia – Lift Station Replacement
Romtec Utilities designed, built, and supplied a lift station replacement for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick, Georgia. The project replaced two aging wastewater lift stations that serve the federal training facility while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.
Romtec Utilities worked with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Native American Services Corporation, and Northcon, Inc. to provide two packaged replacement lift station systems that fit within the footprints of the existing lift stations. The project team combined site-specific engineering with bypass pumping strategies to upgrade critical wastewater infrastructure while maintaining service throughout construction.
Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is one of the nation’s primary law enforcement training facilities. Located in Brunswick, Georgia, the campus provides training for more than 100 federal agencies and supports a wide range of operational and educational activities.
Because the facility operates year-round, reliable wastewater infrastructure is essential. As portions of the existing sewer collection system reached the end of their service life, FLETC initiated a project to replace critical lift stations while maintaining uninterrupted service to the campus.
The project focuses on modernizing wastewater infrastructure while preserving the existing lift station locations and layouts to minimize construction impacts.
Wastewater Infrastructure Replacement
The lift station replacement project included two separate wastewater lift stations.
Romtec Utilities and FLETC developed replacement strategies for both systems before construction began. The goal was to install new lift stations in the same locations as the existing facilities. Simultaneously, Romtec Utilities had to find a way to minimize downtime for the training center and reduce the need for extensive site modifications.
To accomplish this goal, the project team used temporary bypass pumping during demolition and installation activities. This approach kept wastewater flowing while crews removed the old systems and installed the new lift stations.
The project team reduced site disturbance and simplified construction by using the existing lift station locations.
First Wastewater Lift Station Replacement
Romtec Utilities designed the first wastewater lift station replacement as a complete packaged system that fit within the footprint of the existing wet well.
The station includes:
• 4-foot diameter wet well
• Duplex Goulds submersible pumps
• Internal valve assembly
• Outdoor control panel
• Float-based level controls
• Alarm system
To reduce costs and simplify maintenance, Romtec Utilities placed the system valves directly within the wet well instead of using a separate valve vault. This pump system was designed to handle wastewater flows from the training facility while maintaining reliable and efficient operation.
The completed system is capable of pumping up to 150 gallons per minute at a total dynamic head of approximately 30 feet.
Second Sewer Lift Station Replacement
The project includes a second sewer lift station replacement using the same installation strategy.
Like the first station, crews removed the existing wet well and installed a new packaged system directly within the original footprint. Temporary bypass pumping allowed for wastewater services to be maintained while crews installed the replacement system.
The second system utilizes:
• Duplex Goulds submersible pumps
• Float level controls
• Outdoor alternator panel
• Internal valve configuration
• Compact wet well design
While the overall design approach was similar to the first station, the second lift station was sized specifically for its service area and pumping requirements.
The system was designed to pump approximately 40 gallons per minute at a total dynamic head of 15 feet.
Minimizing Downtime During Construction
One of the primary challenges of this lift station replacement project was maintaining wastewater service during construction.
Because crews had to completely remove the existing stations before the new systems could be installed, bypass pumping was required to manage incoming wastewater. Careful planning was necessary to ensure the temporary pumping operation remained reliable and did not interfere with facility operations.
Another challenge involved installing the new lift stations within the same locations as the original systems. This required coordination between the design team, contractor, and installation crews to ensure the replacement systems fit properly while maintaining existing sewer connections.
The project also required minimizing downtime because of the critical nature of wastewater service at an active federal training facility.
Engineering Approach for Faster Installation
Romtec Utilities addressed these challenges by developing site-specific replacement systems designed around the existing infrastructure.
Romteec Utilities engineered both lift stations to fit within the footprints of the original installations, reducing the amount of excavation and site reconstruction required. Romtec also provided guidance for temporary bypass pumping to help maintain operations during the replacement process.
An on-site technician supported installation activities and assisted with commissioning and startup. This support helped ensure the systems were installed according to the design and operating properly before being placed into service.
By combining packaged lift station technology with installation support and commissioning services, Romtec helped streamline the replacement process while reducing disruption to facility operations.
Project Partners
This project was completed through collaboration between several organizations:
• Owner: Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)
• General Contractor: Native American Services Corporation
• Installing Contractor: Northcon, Inc.
• System Provider: Romtec Utilities
Together, these organizations worked to replace critical wastewater infrastructure while maintaining service at one of the nation’s leading federal training facilities.
Conclusion
This lift station replacement project shows how project teams can modenize aging wastewater infrastructure with minimal disruption to operations. By replacing two existing systems within their original locations, the project team reduced site impacts and improved long-term reliability.
Romtec Utilities’ collaboration with FLETC, Native American Services Corporation, and Northcon, Inc. resulted in two packaged wastewater lift stations designed specifically for the needs of the facility. The completed systems provide dependable wastewater collection and support the continued operations at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia.
