Stormwater Pump System Design Challenge for City of Davis Ownership
The existing force main created the biggest design challenge. It runs beneath a major roadway, so the project team could not remove or replace it. Therefore, Romtec Utilities had to design the stormwater lift station around that fixed condition. The City of Davis applies pump system standards that closely match wastewater standards. Because of this, the system needed a municipal-level design for controls, reliability, and review approval.
Custom Stormwater Lift Station Solution for Bretton Woods
Romtec Utilities designed the 55+ residential development stormwater lift station around the existing force main. At the same time, the drainage system met the required discharge rate for the ponds and culverts that collect stormwater during rain events. Romtec Utilities submitted the design through Cunningham Engineering for review and approval by the City of Davis. As a result, the developer received a coordinated pump system design that supported permitting and future construction planning.

K Hovnanian recommended Romtec Utilities to Bretton Woods, LLC and Cunningham Engineering for the drainage pump station design. At first, the project included two pump stations. One station would be privately owned by the HOA. The other would replace an existing City of Davis system. However, the scope later changed to one publicly owned stormwater lift station. The City of Davis became the owner.
Cunningham Engineering supported the civil design and coordinated with the broader review team. Romtec Utilities worked with Bretton Woods, LLC, the City of Davis, BKF, Yolo County, and Pacific Hydrologic Incorporated during the submittal and approval process.
