Industrial Grinder Pump Lift Station at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station
Project Description
Romtec Utilities worked directly with the Shaw Power Group to design, manufacture, and supply two industrial grinder pump stations for the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station near Jenkinsville, South Carolina. Jenkinsville is an incorporated town in South Carolina in the western part of Fairfield County.
This town is situated between the Broad River and the Little River, along State Route 215 and State Route 213.
Nearby are the Parr Shoals Reservoir and Monticello Reservoir. Columbia, South Carolina sits just 25 miles to the southeast.
The Francis Marion & Sumter National Forests are just to the northwest of Jenkinsville providing scenic hikes, views, and waterfalls. The population of Jenkinsville was 40 in the most recent census making it the second smallest town in South Carolina.
Nearby attractions include Lake Monticello Park, Alston Trailhead- Palmetto Trail, Kincaid-Anderson House, River Road Family Campground, Peak to Prosperity Passage of the Palmetto Trail, Cannon’s Creek Public Access, and Linrick Golf Course.
The Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station is located near Jenkinsville and provides electricity for customers of Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper. The plant uses a Westinghouse 3-loop Pressurized Water Reactor to produce electricity by turning a turbine with steam.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities previously provided two lift stations for the Shaw Power Group during the construction of two new nuclear reactors at this power plant. Another phase of the construction project required an additional one for process water created in the power generating processes.
Romtec Utilities was able to meet the requirements of this project quickly and affordably in the same manner that was achieved in the previous project.
This package lift station was configured to handle low flows of industrial process water used for nuclear power generation. It was one of the earliest systems to be installed during the construction of two new reactors at the plant.
Submersible grinder pumps in a duplex configuration and a below grade valve assembly comprise the principal mechanical operations. An outdoor control panel utilizes floats for primary liquid level-sensing, and an auto dialer for communications and alarm notification.
The industrial grinder pump lift station features a 4′ diameter wet well, 3″ discharge piping, MP3068 Flygt pumps, and a 3″ – 577 VALVE VAULT. It pumps up to 35 gallons per minute with a total dynamic head of 33.6’
