Stormwater Pump System in Olympia, WA – FSCSS
Olympia, Washington is the capital of the state at the bottom of the Puget Sound. Seattle is about an hour northeast of this city, up Interstate 5 while Portland is about 100 miles to the south.
The Budd Inlet and the Eld Inlet extend to this area, which attach to the Puget Sound. Right next to this is Capitol Lake, which is adjacent to the Washington State Capitol Campus and is home to the Governor’s Mansion that was built in 1909.
Old Highway 99 and U.S. Route 101 run through this area. The City of Olympia had a population of 55,605 at the 2020 census and is the county seat of Thurston County. The population has been growing, as it was 46,478 at the 2010 census.
There are many local attractions including Percival Landing Park, West Bay Park, Garfield Nature Trail Park, Marathon Park, Sylvester Park, Watershed Park, Squaxin Park, Grass Lake Nature Reserve, Mission Creek Nature Park, and Tumwater Historical Park. Capital Lakefair is the annual summer festival held near Puget Sound that brings the community together.
Another means of supporting the community in Olympia is an affordable housing development for a private project. This project is funded by the developer, the public, and grant funding.
The developer is Family Support Center of South Sound (FSCSS), a nonprofit multi-service agency in Olympia, Washington, founded in 1992. The agency provides over 4,000 parents, children, and survivors of violence with coordinated, supportive services in one centralized location.
The system’s purpose is to take water from a detention pond and discharge it to the other end of the site for dispersion. The pump station is sized for the 100-year storm.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities was contacted by The Blueline Group. We have coordinated multiple projects with Blueline, such as Bella Cresta, MacDonald Estates, and Paramount Apartments. Blueline is an engineering consultant who provides civil engineering and land-use development services in Kirkland, Washington.
They were well into the CD phase, but due to site changes, it was determined that a pump station would be required. Romtec Utilities worked with Blueline to develop preliminary designs, scopes, budgets, and spec drawings that could be passed to the owner and included in the plan set to be purchased by the contractor at the time of bid.
Walsh Construction was the general contractor for the housing development while Bayshore Construction Company installed the stormwater pump system. Bayshore Construction Company provides demolition, excavation, utility work, concrete foundation, structural slabs, and architectural concrete out of Arlington.
We worked with Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. on this project, whom we have worked with before on DLR OR2-PDX12, Fashion Valley, Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus, QTS – HIL1 DC2, and Yeon Tilt Up projects.
The stormwater station has duplex 2 horsepower Grundfos submersible pumps, in-well check valves and external “can” valves. The precast 5’ ID x 15.5’ deep wet well uses a E&H pressure transducer for primary level sending and Nolta MS1 floats for secondary level sensing.
Romtec Utilities worked closely with the Blueline Group to bring this stormwater pump station project to fruition for the Family Support Center of South Sound housing development project in Olympia, Washington.
