Salem Hospital – Commercial Kitchen Wastewater Pumping
Project Description
The Salem Hospital in Oregon needed a new wastewater lift station to handle medium flows of sewer and food preparation wastewater. The commercial kitchen for the hospital is located in a basement room, creating a design challenge for the kitchen. A typical grease trap for a kitchen was not possible for this location, and the plan was for the kitchen to discharge directly into the new lift station. In order to accommodate the incoming FOG (fats, oils, and grease) from the kitchen, Romtec Utilities supplied a high powered wet well mixer to breakup grease build-up and applied an interior Tnemec wet well coating to prevent sticking. Additionally, this lift station includes Weil Slicer pumps, a style of macerating pumps, in a duplex configuration to handle possible solids draining from the kitchen.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
Romtec Utilities worked with the Engineering firm Harper Houf Peterson Righellis Inc., HHPR, on this project. The HHPR plan called for draining the kitchen waste directly into the lift station wet well, so Romtec Utilities was tapped for design and engineering expertise to make this plan work. Romtec Utilities was able to accommodate the design preferences while still providing a cost-effective lift station for the application. Romtec Utilities manufactured the lift station and supplied it to the installing contractor, Turner Construction Co., with K&E Excavation providing the initial site work. Pumping in this type of application is difficult, but Romtec Utilities was able to utilize expertise in macerating pumps and atypical accessory options to meet this goals for this project.
