Orange County – Stormwater Lift Station
Project Description
The Santa Ana Delhi Lift Station project was brought to Romtec Utilities by AECOM (previously known as URS). AECOM is an infrastructure firm that has expertise on wastewater treatment facilities. Naturally, wastewater and lift stations go hand in hand, as the lift stations are necessary to get the water to treatment. AECOM and Romtec Utilities worked together on the early conceptual design, the early budgetary phase, and ultimately a complete system design.
This project is a new lift station handling low flows in the Santa Ana Delhi Channel in Newport Beach, California. This system collects stormwater in a 10’ inner diameter (ID) wet well that reaches 32’ in depth. In the bottom of the well, three Ebara 20 horsepower (HP) submersible pumps sit ready to pump out the water. The pumps will be triggered by an AST4520 pressure transducer, which sits in the bottom of the wet well and measures the level of the water by determining the pressure of the water. When the pressure gets high enough from the rising amount of water in the well, the pressure transducer will send a signal to the controller for the pumps to start. It will also monitor the lowering pressure while the water is being pumped out, to ensure that when the water gets low enough the pumps will turn off.
This system also features 5 NOLTA floats as secondary level sensors in the event of failure of the pressure transducer. In addition to the precast wet well, there is also a precast valve vault, with a pressure switch and gauge; a precast meter vault, with a flowmeter; and a precast electrical junction box, with two interior closures for level sensing and pump cables.
During this project, Romtec Utilities had the opportunity to work with AECOM, Lonerock Construction, and Orange County to make this design concept a reality. The combined effort and funding from the Irvine Ranch Water District, the City of Costa Mesa, and the City of Santa Ana was able to bring together all of these experienced agencies to deliver a station that would be perfectly suited for the Santa Ana Delhi Channel’s needs.
