Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District – Wastewater Lift Station
Wastewater Lift Station Project Description
In the ML Flow Splitter project, Romtec Utilities supplied a wastewater lift station that will be owned and maintained by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District.
Black and Veatch, the site engineer, reached out to Romtec Utilities for the design of this lift station. The Romtec Utilities lift station is a small portion of Black and Veatch’s multi-million dollar project for a new water treatment plant. The encompassing project spans over several years, and will result in cleaner discharge in the Sacramento River as well as the potential recycling of water.
The new water treatment uses a process called “biological nutrient removal”, also known as BNR, which will remove ammonia and nitrates from the water (regionalsan.com). Coined “Echowater”, this project was brought on by a change in the State of California’s requirements for processing wastewater, and directly affects residents serviced by Regional San, the operator of the regional wastewater system that services Folsom, Sacramento, and West Sacramento.
Wastewater Lift Station Design
The Romtec Utilities lift station is fed from 3 settling ponds located nearby, each of which has a floating weir that will be raised and lowered by a motor, and at the lowest point the ponds will drain into the lift station.
The water will drain into a precast concrete, 6’ inner diameter wet well that is 18.5’ in depth. This duplex system uses two 5 horsepower Ebara submersible pumps to meet the duty point and four NOLTA floats for level sensing. The level readings from the floats are sent to a duplex configured alternator to manage the pumping cycles of the wastewater.
A precast valve vault was also supplied for the ML Flow Splitter project, and includes added features such an air release valve, pressure switch, and a pressure gauge. An air release valve (ARV) was provided in this system to release any trapped air in the pipes, which can reduce efficiency or even cause an “air lock”. ARVs are typically located at high points in the system, as any entrapped air will gather there.
This lift station and its components were installed by Dragados USA, Inc. Dragados has worked on transportation, hydraulic, and underground projects since their establishment in 2005, and was able to successfully install the Romtec Utilities designed system for the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District. Thanks to Dragados USA’s help, and Black and Veatch, Romtec Utilities was able to perform a successful startup and commission of this lift station.
