Portland International Airport – High Volume Stormwater Pump Station
Project Description
The Portland International Airport (PDX) needed a very large pump station to discharge high volumes of stormwater to a runoff creek from one of its runways. PDX has high groundwater tables due to its location near the Columbia River. Romtec Utilities met the high-volume, low-head requirements of this application by using 50 hp Flygt axial flow pumps. A 15 hp jockey pump was also included. These large pumps required large piping and operational valves measuring 24-inches in diameter. To reduce the construction lead times, Romtec Utilities engineered three individual, precast concrete vaults to contain each of the triplex discharge valves. The wet well was engineered as a rectangular panel vault that could be completely precast. Inside the wet well a pressure transducer provides the primary level-sensing method with a redundant NOLTA float. The system controls utilized a Micrologix 1400 controller with a PLC panel.

Why They Chose Romtec Utilities
KPFF Portland, the project engineer, came to Romtec Utilities for the design and supply of a stormwater pump station for the Port of Portland, the end owners. This project was one part of a large improvement project that included stormwater infrastructure for PDX. The project was overseen by K&E Excavation, the general contractor. Once the pump station was designed and ready for installation, Oxbow Construction, a sub-contractor for the pump station install, purchased the system directly from Romtec Utilities. During the installation, Romtec Utilities provided a field technician to answer any questions related to the pump station design or documentation. Once installation was complete and the system was ready for start-up, our field technician provided commissioning services including, start-up services, troubleshooting the systems, and a 2-day training for owners and operators.
