McIntosh, Alabama Industrial Process Lift Station
For this industrial process water lift station, Romtec Utilities partnered with Linde Engineering to design a system for stormwater and process water. The industrial stormwater pump station is for a hydrogen facility in McIntosh, Alabama where most of the inflow will be stormwater along with some condensed steam from process drains. Therefore, the temperature will be high on occasion, but the pumping environment is not corrosive or caustic.
We utilized a polymer precast wet well with a top slab and hatch, along with an above-grade valve assembly, Goulds 3-horsepower vertical suspended shaft pumps in a duplex configuration, and a Primex primary controller. We completed the project within a tight timeline, despite lead times on some system components.
At Romtec Utilities, we design, manufacture, and supply industrial process water lift stations with various water inputs to support industrial plants. This plant in McIntosh increased its liquid hydrogen supply through recent facility improvements, which included the addition of this industrial process lift station.
Industrial Process Pump Station
McIntosh, Alabama is a town in the southwest part of the state north of Mobile sitting along U.S. Route 43. It is within Washington County and had a population of 206 during the 2020 census. Over half of the population reported being of native descent in the same census.
The Tombigbee River runs past the town on the east side.
Some local attractions include the Andrews Chapel which is one of a few remaining log churches and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Linde Engineering Americas reached out to Romtec Utilities looking for assistance with a storm/process water lift station for a former Praxair facility in McIntosh, Alabama. Linde is a global leader in the production, processing, storage, and distribution of hydrogen. It has the largest liquid hydrogen capacity and distribution system in the world. The company also operates the world’s first high-purity hydrogen storage cavern coupled with an unrivalled pipeline network to reliably supply its customers.
Industrial Facility Improvements
Linde has acquired Praxair and is familiar with past projects Romtec Utilities has completed for Praxair.
Most of the inflow for the industrial pump station will be stormwater, but there will be some condensed steam from process drains. The water temps will be high on occasion, but they were not anticipating a corrosive or caustic environment.
Linde originally envisioned a submersible system in an existing open pit. They were open to suggestions on pump type based on the water temps with Romtec Utilities getting approval for above grade Goulds pumps.
Linde also later agreed to a precast wet well with top slab and hatch as opposed to utilizing the existing open pit. This is part of a much larger improvements project at the McIntosh facility. Linde directly purchased the lift station due to Romtec Utilities’ design abilities and short timelines to project completion.
The timeline was one of the main challenges that Romtec Utilities worked with Linde on despite some expected long lead-times on specific parts.

Industrial Process Pump Station
Romtec Utilities is working with Linde on a few other pump system projects as they have many facilities throughout the U.S.
With the recent facility improvements, the Linde McIntosh facility now produces up to 30 tons per day of liquid hydrogen for the local merchant market. The plant will meet increasing demand for hydrogen from Linde’s existing and new customers in end markets including manufacturing and electronics. It will also supply hydrogen to Linde’s space launch and mobility customers.
This industrial process water lift station is a great example of an industrial plant, that upgraded its facilities to increase its output, while bringing on a new pump system to meet the plant’s needs.
Romtec Utilities was pleased to design, manufacture, and supply this industrial process pump station for the Linde facility in McIntosh, Alabama. It features a Polymer wet well, with an above grade valve assembly, with duplex Goulds vertical suspended shaft pumps that pump 75 gallons per minute.
At Romtec Utilities we work with many industrial plant owners and engineers to provide industrial process water lift stations for wastewater, process water, and stormwater purposes. Contact us today if you want to get started on your next project.
