Milan Federal Correctional Institute – Low-Cost Lift Station Retrofit
Project Description
Milan is a city in southeast Michigan that is located to the south of Ann Arbor and about 50 miles southwest of Detroit.
It is about 24 miles from Lake Erie which is one of the Great Lakes in North America. The border to get into Ohio is about 28 miles south along U.S. Route 23 which runs through the city. The city is within both Monroe and Washtenaw counties with a population of about 6,000.
The Saline River flows close by and there are many parks and recreational opportunities. Some of the attractions include the Milan Nature Park that is adjacent to the Saline River, Wilson Park, Gump Lake Park, the Draper-Houston Meadows Preserve, Sanford Road Park, and Original Gravity Brewing Company.
The Federal Correctional Institute Milan is a low security federal correctional institution that has a detention center in Michigan. The FCI needed to replace two aging lift stations that were experiencing operational problems.
The expense for two full replacements was too large to bear for the prison that is ran by the Federal Bureau of Prisons which is under the U.S. Department of Justice.
Romtec Utilities was contacted to propose a plan to retrofit the existing infrastructure. After visiting the prison, the technicians and engineers from Romtec Utilities engineered a plan to complete the retrofit packages.
To make use of the below-grade sumps, two skid-mounted lift station systems were configured for medium sewage flows.
Milan Federal Correctional Institute was able to purchase both complete skid-mounted systems through the Romtec Utilities GSA contract, providing huge cost savings for the design, manufacturing, delivery, and installation of the replacements.
Preassembled above-grade skids with Pioneer self-priming pumps in duplex configurations drop suction piping into the existing sumps to pump effluent to the existing force mains.
The valves and control panels were delivered preassembled on the skid. The skid-mounted control panels include intrinsically safe barriers for in-well electrical controls and pressure transducers and conductive probes for primary and backup liquid level-sensing.
This low-cost lift station retrofit that Romtec Utilities provided met the needs of FCI Milan located in Michigan. Romtec Utilities was happy to provide the design, manufacture, and supply of the two-skid mounted lift station systems that retrofitted the existing structures.
This project showcases how Romtec Utilities can provide design and engineering for an existing structure, instead of having to completely replace it, which can be a much higher cost. Romtec Utilities can design a pump station to fit very specific specifications, building codes, or federal requirements.
We completely design, manufacture, and supply the entire pump system including the wet well, pumps, level controls, and pump control panels. This complete pump system gives the end owner or developer peace of mind that the entire configuration is covered and ensured to pump to the standards of that specific project.
