Palmdale, California – Airport Industrial Stormwater Pump Station
For this airport industrial stormwater pump station, Romtec Utilities designed a system with a double wall fiberglass wet well with leak detection at an aerospace and defense company located at the airport. This airport industrial stormwater pump station ensures that any fuel or VOCs in stormwater is properly dealt with.
Romtec Utilities has designed many stormwater pump stations for airports to deal with large amounts of stormwater.
Palmdale, California, has a rich history of aeronautics as it’s home to the United States Air Force Plant 42 and Joe Davies Heritage Airpark at the Palmdale Regional Airport. Palmdale is about an hour north of Los Angeles in the Antelope Valley which includes rugged mountains and desert terrain. The population of Palmdale and neighboring Lancaster is over 500,000 in their combined urban area.
Key Features of the Stormwater Pump System
A renowned aerospace and defense technology company needed an industrial pump station handling stormwater run-off with potential for fuel at their portion of the airport. Romtec Utilities provided a pump station solution with a double wall fiberglass structure.
The industrial stormwater pump station project was led by the owner. Romtec Utilities designed, manufactured, and supplied the complete industrial pump station for this project.
Having a system with a double walled fiberglass wet well with leak detection is one of the most effective ways to prevent these contaminants from entering the environment.
The stormwater pump station features:
- fiberglass 6′ ID x 18′ deep wet well
- duplex Ebara submersible pumps
- 4″ above grade valve assembly
- Micrologixs 1400 PLC primary controller
- FMR20 Radar for level sensing
- NOLTA MS1 Floats for secondary level sensing
- NEMA 3R painted steel enclosure for the control panel.
Romtec Utilities can design the stormwater pump station to have alarms and various controls that immediately notify the owner or maintenance team of any leaks so they can act accordingly.
Project Partners for the Airport Stormwater Pump Station
The stormwater pump station can pump up to 389 gallons per minute with a 54.5 total dynamic head.
Jacobs Engineering was the site engineer for this project.
California Compaction Corporation was the sub-contractor who installed the industrial pump station. They provide site preparation and development of facilities or systems like sewer, water, storm drain, and dry utilities.
Romtec Utilities was able to design an industrial stormwater pump station for this aerospace company that is housed at the Palmdale Regional Airport.
Romtec Utilities worked on a variety of projects where a double walled fiberglass wet well with leak detection was needed.
Airport Pumping Environment
Airports come with their own unique pumping environment. Especially for stormwater pump stations, there can be a lot of water that falls on runways that needs to be dealt with. Sometimes fuel or VOCs, or other contaminants can make their way into stormwater so it’s important to capture the stormwater and treat it before it enters out waterways.
Large storm events can put a lot of water down on a runway in short periods of time and having a large enough system to deal with that is important during those events.
At airports there can be a lot of infrastructure already underground which takes time and a design specialist to work through different infrastructure at the site of the airport. Romtec Utilities has a team of engineers who have worked through this process before.
Romtec Utilities sends a site technician to the site upon installation of the system to ensure it’s installed according to the design. They provide commissioning of the system along with training on the controls, alarms, and operations of the system for maintenance personnel.
At Romtec Utilities, we manufacture a variety of the different parts and components of the system to ensure a high level of quality control. We also do this to help cut down on costs, time, and equipment needed to install the system on site. This can add up to saving weeks or days, which adds up to a lot of money from less equipment use.
