Ontario, California Now and Future Pump System
This project was unique because it is a now and future pump system for the Inland Empire in California.
Romtec Utilities designed the system with the potential to add larger pumps in the future depending on the expansion of the sewer system in that area. It is an intelligent strategy for long-term growth to engineer a system that meets current requirements and has the capability for upgrades in the future.
When providing a now and future expansion pumping system, Romtec Utilities ensures that all aspects are capable of supporting a larger system down the line. These include the power supply, vault sizes, force mains, and more. Preparing for a larger system while meeting the current system needs is a great way to save money on the pump station project overall. Preparing for future growth has set the Inland Empire up for success and savings on their sewer expansion project.
The Inland Empire and Long-Term Pump Projects
Ontario, California is a city near San Bernadino, within San Bernadino County, and 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Ontario is with the Inland Empire, which is an inland region and metropolitan area adjacent to the coastal region of southern California. The city had a population of 175,265 as of the 2020 census and is within the Greater Los Angeles Area.
Some of the attractions in Ontario include the Planes of Fame Air Museum, Yanks Air Museum, Ontario Museum of History & Art, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, Chaffey Community Museum of Art, Ontario International Airport, Ontario Soccer Park, Westwind Park, Creekside Park, John Galvin Park, Veterans Memorial Park, Whispering Lakes Golf Course, and Topgolf Ontario.
A large mass of freight traffic goes through Ontario between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This wastewater lift station was part of a future expansion project to build a new sewer line before a new roadway was built in Ontario, California. Romtec Utilities designed this system under a DSO with Albert A. Webb and Associates (AWA) along with the City of Ontario. This project went to public bid and AWA used our specifications.
Major Players in the Now and Future Pump System Project
Albert A. Webb and Associates provides civil engineering and planning services to the public and private sector throughout Inland Southern California and are based in Riverside, California.
The winning contractor was WEKA, Inc who installed the wastewater lift station on behalf of the City of Ontario. WEKA, Inc is a construction company based in San Bernardino, CA.

A Wastewater Lift Station for a Future Expansion Project
Romtec Utilities worked through the design of this lift station before the public bid. This way the City of Ontario got exactly what they wanted.
The wastewater lift station features Ebarra 3 horsepower pumps, 6’ diameter wet well, a 6’ x ’8 valve vault, a pressure transducer, 4” discharge piping, and NEMA3R, 480V/3PH duplex alternating control panel. The now and future pump system was also originally started with a generator, but Romtec Utilities ended up designing and supplying a second start-up on permanent power.
Romtec Utilities was happy to partner with the City of Ontario on the design, manufacture, supply, and commissioning of this wastewater lift station that accompanied a new sewer line in the city as part of a long-term pump project. WEKA, Inc. And Albert A. Webb and Associates were great partners on the project to get it to the finish line so that this new sewer line is up and running in a busy portion of the city.
At Romtec Utilities, our team of engineers work hand in hand with cities, civil engineers, and developers all over the United States to create a pumping system that meets their needs, including the controls. Having remote access is important when dealing with controls or alarms on the system and providing ease of mind to maintenance personnel.
We can design a wastewater lift station for now and future expansions to meet the wants of the city or entity while meeting local pumping standards or regulations, all while providing a single entity who handles the entire process from start to finish.
At Romtec Utilities, we prefabricate a good portion of the system before sending it to the job site to ensure function and a quicker installation process. This includes a high level of quality control to ensure the system will operate as designed. We will also send an onsite installation technician who will help with a smooth installation.
