City of Laguna Beach – High Profile Lift Station Replacement
Project Description
Laguna Beach in southern California is a beautiful city in Orange County that features a variety of beaches along the Pacific coastline. It’s also known as halfway point between Los Angeles and San Diego. The population is 23,000 but brings in about 6 million visitors each year as tourism is the primary industry.
Los Angeles is about 50 miles to the northwest, while Huntington Beach is about 15 miles up State Route 1.
Some major events held here are the Festival of Arts, Sawdust Art Festival, Art-A-Fair, KelpFest, and Bluewater Music Festival.
Main Beach has tidepools and a well-known boardwalk that is popular for visitors or locals to enjoy the stunning coastline. Some of the great beaches in this area include Crescent Bay Beach, Victoria Beach, Shaw’s Cove, Picnic Cove, Aliso Beach, Treasure Island Beach, and Thalia Street Beach. Other local attractions include Crystal Cove State Park, Laguna Art Museum, and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.
The City of Laguna Beach needed to replace an existing wastewater lift station under unique circumstances. The existing lift station–and the plot for the new lift station-were in the sand of Main Beach, just 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean.
Romtec Utilities worked with Dudek and Associates (Civil Engineer) to design a replacement wastewater lift station package with a large dry pit and two HDPE wet wells. This configuration was chosen to accommodate the size of the pumps required and to meet the City’s standards for accessing confined spaces. The specific site requirements added cost to the system, but Romtec Utilities and Dudek and Associates ensured that this lift station would withstand constant exposure to salt water for an extended life cycle in accordance with the City’s requirements. Dudek & Associates is based out of Encinitas, California and provides environmental, planning, and engineering services.
This high flow wet/dry lift station replacement was installed “in the sand” of Main Beach with three dry pit pumps in a 26-feet-deep precast rectangular vault.
Triplex split case pumps, sump pumps, an intake/exhaust fan, lights, valves, stairs, and a mezzanine were all provided in the package. The Allen Bradley PLC control panel, flow transmitter, and junction box are in a control building. Sophisticated SCADA, 3 levels of redundancy, auxiliary power, and an HDPE wet well are all primary components of this package lift station.
Romtec Utilities was proud to be included in this project for the City of Laguna Beach in California to replace an existing wastewater lift station at Main Beach.
Dudek and Associates was a great partner to work with on this project as Romtec Utilities worked with them to meet all requirements for the new lift station while prioritizing three levels of redundancy.
